crash during backups

Hi all,
I am running win2000pro latest updates.
Asus p4c800E mobo

Problem ......
When I do a full system backup using PowerQuest drive image 7,
the computer crashes with the loss of my usb belkin 8 to1card reader.
Device manager shows our dreaded yellow friend.
The reader is plugged in to a fixed port on the back of the motherboard.
I have to uninstall and reinstall the reader drivers etc. All is then ok and
the card reader then works fine.

This has only just started happening, after about a year in use.

If I do a backup with the card read uninstalled it runs through ok, but it
is taking a lot longer (about 2 and a half hours to complete a 16 g backup)
The backup goes onto another hdd.
I havent tried swapping usb sockets yet because they all are in use.
Does anyone have any ideas?
thanks for any replies
regards Peter
