Does the Southbridge look like the picture at the top
of this thread ? This is called latchup failure, and
can happen to any of the many motherboards that use
the ICH5/ICH5R Southbridge. The burn marks are right
above the pins on the bottom of the chip, that supply
power to the USB ports. The root cause is static
discharge that blows the USB ports (at least for
many people, the last thing they remember doing, is
plugging in a USB device). There are a few failures
where there seems to be no causal event, and it
just dies on a reboot.

If you use the Asus warranty, Asus will solder a new chip
in its place.
