Also, what memory would be recommended for this system? A friend
recommended
Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500). This is expensive stuff, over $400
for a 2GB set. I will not trying for maximum overclocking, maybe a
little.

Compare the storage interfaces on the two boards, to help make
up your mind.
On the P5W DH, the Southbridge (ICH7R) has four SATA and an IDE cable
(PRI_IDE) for two PATA drives. Since many good opticals are still
PATA interface, it is convenient to be able to boot from an optical,
when doing an OS install.
Downside of the P5W DH, is the use of the SIL4723, connected
to one of the Southbridge ports. The SIL4723 complicates things,
and might have been better moved out of the way and connected
to the JMB363 instead. Just so the average user would have
"less manual to read". The P5W DH looks like this:
PCI-E x1 Hub_bus
| |
| |
JMB363 Southbridge ------ PRI_IDE
| | \ | | | \
SATA Ext Pri Sata Sata Sata \
RAID Sata EIDE 1 3 4 \
1 Silicon (Hardware
Image RAID
4723 Chip)
| |
(EZ_RAID1) Sata Sata (EZ_RAID2)
* FAST/RAID 0
* SAFE/RAID 1
* BIG/Spanning
* JBOD/Port Multiplier
The P5B Deluxe has a Southbridge with 6 SATA ports and no IDE
cable. That means an optical must be connected to whatever other
device Asus included on the board (another JMB363).
While there are SATA optical drives (Plextor made a few), in
terms of compatibility, there are still rough edges. In
terms of de-risking the storage subsystem, at the current
time I still feel the ICH7R is a better bet.
Actually, a superior implementation is Southbridges with
four SATA ports and two IDE cables. That allows Luddites
like myself, to connect four PATA drives if I want, and
allows SATA purists to connect only SATA drives. But I
would not expect Intel to take a "customer centric" view
about design - Intel is more of a "technology push" firm,
leaving it to motherboard manufacturers to scramble around
to find the more "customer centric" components to finish
the job.
For your memory question, a FSB1066 processor with a 64 bit
interface, transfers 8528MB/sec. Two DDR2-533 DIMMs, each
with 64 bit interfaces, transfer 8528MB/sec when operated
in dual channel mode. The memory interface is not 100%
efficient, so to fill in the gaps, running faster than
DDR2-533 helps. But the performance improvement is a
couple percent per step up the speed range. Some low
latency DDR2-800 would be as much good as some
higher latency DDR2-1066.
When overclocking, you should be able to select a
different memory divider, to help the memory stay within
specs.

I downloaded the manual for the P5B Deluxe from the Asus web site. You are
right, it uses a JMB363 controller for PATA and 2 additional SATA ports.
Since the PATA port will only be used for a DVDRW drive it should be more
than adiquate.
The main reason I chose the P5B over the P5W is the faster memory controller
of the P965 chipset. I also like the overclocking abilities of the new P5B
bios. It allows the CPU multiplier to be changed giving more options. I
might never use it but it nice to know it can be done. The only advantage
the P5W had was the ATI CrossFire Technology, which I would never use.
