Hi,

I am building a new system for the first time in a few years and
wanted to run the components I plan to buy through this group
to see if there is anybody willing to share opinions of what I may
want to rethink. This is my first ASUS MB - have been using
MSI prior to this. My primary goal is to steer toward lower
cost over performance and upgrade components later if it makes
sense. I'm not much of a gamer but am into home video editing
and that is the primary reason for the upgrade.

In any case, I have a handful of components in hand that I was
either given or bought over the last few months that start the
system off as follows:

ASUS A8R-MVP motherboard
AMD 64x2 4400+ CPU (will upgrade down the road)
nVidia e-GeForce 7300 GS graphics card
WD2500KS 250 GB SATA drive (2 - plan to run Raid 0)

And the parts I intend to add are:

Antec LifeStyle Sonata II case with 450W SmartPower 2.0
Thermaltake CL-P0075 CPU heatsink/fan
Kingston ValueRAM 1GB 184 pin PC3200 SDRAM
NEC 16X DVD+-R Burner Model ND-3550A
Linkskey LKA-CR15B Card reader/writer

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

The board is S939, the memory setup is dual channel, so buying
2x512MB PC3200 and placing one stick per channel might be the
best config. That will give you 1GB total memory.

For feedback on the board, here are a couple places to look.

The "poor" and "very poor" rating here, must be some kind
of record for an Asus board. Only 50% give the board 5 stars.

Since you already own the board, might as well try it out.
You might consider plugging the Linkskey into a separate
USB PCI card, judging by a few comments I read about
USB problems.

Thanks very much for the feedback. I will follow your advice on the
2 512MB sticks instead of a single 1GB.

I had noticed that the rating at Newegg was not too high. I got
the board for free and will see what happens and replace it with
something else if I need to. It came from a friend who was
running a system off it without problem so hopefully it is past the
DOA risk but I'll see when I get it built.

I'll also look at moving my old USB card over to avoid the USB
problems.

Thanks,
Tim.
