Re: any core 2 duo motherboard with onboard video?

thanks for the advice. alas, I could not find any such motherboard
that has DVI onboard. the closest was the ASRock board, but it
requires a riser board for a slot. at this point, I can probably find
myself a PCI card that does video, instead.

the xp-aero is no big deal, because I not only run linux, I also will
have one real graphics card, anyway. I would like the onboard DVI [a]
if I want to diagnose problems or recycle the computer later on to
family; [b] to output to a third monitor. I like the center of my
vision to be undivided.

(of course, I cannot figure out how to do three monitors with my asus
A8N-VM CSM, either, as the onboard seems to go off when the card goes
in, despite claims by sudhian.com that this should not be the case.
grrr....)

so, it looks like I am too early.

Yes, there are several. I don't have a specific suggestion, but you are
looking for a motherboard with a variant of the 945G chipset. Note that
not all 945's support Core 2 Duo, but some do and also have onboard
graphics. The graphics are 3D and actaully are not that bad. They are
not up to high-end gaming standards, but are otherwise quite capable.

One caution, these chipsets use shared memory video systems, so if you
want to run Vista next year, you will need a gigabyte of total memory
memory since 512MB of total memory will only give you 384 meg of system
memory (after deducting the 128MB used for video), and Vista requires a
minimum of 512MB of system memory. Also, check on the status of the
chipset in question relative to it's ability to support Aero. For
example, Intel GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) 900 chipset video does
not support Aero, but GMA 950 does (although it's only the lack of a
driver the prevents GMA 900 from running Aero, but as of this time
neither Intel nor MS plans to write the necessary driver).

I just need 2d processing, so I don't care if the 3d part is SLOW. the
old ati xpress 200 and geforce 6150 did it (even with DVI!). It comes
in especially useful when I want to drive a 3-monitor setup. alas, I
have yet to see a board that takes both the core 2 duo AND has onboard
(DVI) graphics.

any advice?
