Boot to DOS with a win 98 boot disk, type fdisk /mbr -- that's all, that did
it, no more message about viruses (half a dozen virus scanners all said it
was clean)

I really don't think there is a need to run HJT in this scenario.

Forum registration is usually free. You may register with an alias
(recommended). This is to avoid spam and keep the threads clean since the
posts are also moderated. In addition, you may always refer to the history
without registering. Sometimes it provides clues. Have you tried to google
a
bit with the relevant words ?

I don't have any antivirus running in the background. I trust in "the
cleaner" and in "Zone Alarm", last version (3.5.169) before they added the
antivirus module. Surveying on a regular basis the running processes and
the
registery keys with HJT and MSconfig, paying attention to every abnormal
thing that appears I keep my system clean. HJT is my first aid.

Of course, this is my feeling. Should you have good reasons to do
something
else, this is your own right !
