Re: Problem with Western Digital HDD

You misunderstood, or I didn't correctly explain;
A hd containing an o/s will not boot, or at least v.unlikely, on a different
PC if this same hd is used as boot disk with the installed o/s

Hi

I have a Western Digital HDD (WD800JB) that works fine in one PC but
when I
try to make it a slave on another pc it simply keeps rebooting. It has
two
partitions - one with Wndows XP and the other just with data. I want to
wipe
the windows partition but keep the data (mainly mp3s).

The new pc has an ASUS A7N8X-X motherboard with AMD Athlon 1.09GHz and
1.25GHz of RAM and the new HDD is Maxator 250GHz.

The BIOS picks it up OK but even if I set it as master it still wont
work I get a very brief "Blues screen of death" then it reboots. I
busily copying over all the files via my network but the original plan
was to leave all the files on the WD drive and just install it as a
slave. I think it might be a motherboard issue.

I saw the earlier reply by the "other" old man that a drive once used
in the master position on an XP system couldn't be used as a slave on
another computer without some kind of repair installation.... I'd
never heard of that, so if that works, fine. But if that doesn't,
here's another thing to check for. Newer IDE drives, particularly WD,
need to be positioned on the 80-wire cables according to their
jumbers, ie, the master has to be on the END connector of the cable,
and the slave on the "mid" position. ie, in the "cable select"
positions to insure they work properly. If that doesn't help, try
positioning them on the connectors this way, and jumpering them for
cable select rather than the "master" and "slave" jumpers.
