I want an Athlon 64 CPU but don't know which MB to get. I don't want
to spend a lot of money ( not over $150) for the motherboard. It
would be nice if there is a slot for either a AGP or PCI-E video card.
We won't be doing any Raid so I'd like IDE on the MB.
Other than the above I really don't care.
Also which AMD cpu is the best. Our budget is around $300 to $350.
All I need is CPU, Memory, P.S., & MB. A video card if there isn't
one onboard.
I found two boards that fit the bill but don't know which one is best.
They are the
A8N-VM-CSM > A8N-E
Here is a side by side comparison:

One PCIx1 slot Two PCIx1 slots
Two PCI slots Three PCI slots
On board video No on board video
Passive cooler Northbridge cooled by fan: noisier....
Audio: ADI Audio: realtek: better, more capable
1394a port No 1394a firewire....
3 audio ports 6 audio ports
mATX ATX
PCIx4 slot
S/PDIF Out
If music/sound is important to you, would lean towards the A8N-E; if not, looks like the A8N-VM-CSM using the on board graphics would be a solid, simple, stable system.
Processor: for $99, this is a great one:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 2000MHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail
$109: 3500:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3500BPBOX - Retail
Could not tell from your message if your *total* budget for motherboard, processor, and memory is $350 (that's doable), but, if your *processor* budget is $300:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA3800BVBOX - Retail about $300. Sweet dual core processor....
Here are all the socket 939 processors ranked by their review scores:

You can easily switch it to sorting by price, high to low or low to high, or, exclude all processors above a certain price.
Also, memory, if you don't already have some: one of these name brands will work best, comes with lifetime warranty, and, I cannot believe how cheap it is right now: (see link below, picked out the ones with good name, lots of headroom, should work for years without issues).
Kingston, Micron, Corsair are brands that I have had good experiences with, in that order....some issues with some Corsair sticks of late, several DOAs, whereas I have never gotten a DOA Kingston or Micron. All give great warranty service.
Don't torture yourself and save a few bucks getting cheap no name or bargain basement RAM....you will regret it, sooner or later, probably sooner.
