I managed to figure it out. in the BIOS there is a setting called "ACPI
Suspend to RAM" It was disabled... Enabled it, and it now lists S3 in
addition to the other 3 options. Checked the status, and in listed S3 as
the minimum... I have yet to test it, but I'm sure that it will work now;
every lists as it should, so I don't see why not...
Anybody else who has similar problems should definitely check in their
BIOS... I was looking for other terminology, and missed this setting many
times. I only thought to look for it after searching through many other
sites about the problem, and running across an explanation on the site I
have linked to below. It was dealing with a board from ASUS, so that is
what tipped me off to the different terminology for the same thing...
In case anybody else is wondering, my board is an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe...

OK, I didn't quite solve my problem... Goes into suspend (standby) now as
it should (no fans), but when restarted via my PS2 keyboard or with the
power button, I get fans, and a constant HD LED. Won't boot back up... I
tried pressing the reset button, and it booted as a fresh start, however my
power LED is still flashing as if it's still in standby... ?? Tried
actually setting down, and while the computer is off, the power LED is off.
Soon as I boot up again, the power LED flashes... IT WON'T STOP FLASHING!
AHH!!!
Any advice... While sort of neat, the novelty wears off REAL fast... It's
to the point of annoying at the moment...
There is a thread here, with somewhat similar symptoms.

When the computer starts up, you get fans, and a constant HD LED, are
you sure the computer isn't coming out of S4, and reading a
hibernate file ? I've never tried S4, but I assume the LED would be
on for a bit, in order to fill the entire RAM from a hiber file.
There are some pretty old threads on the subject:
