Windows can not start up from a Secondary Master, can it?
I'm pretty sure it can, though XP counts the primary master HDD on IDE 1 as
"C:", and will install the bootloader there, and you can install Windows on
any partition you like. If you remove the HDD set as master, even though
your XP system is on another HDD entirely, you won't be able to boot into
Windows. This can affect things like installation to third party SATA
controllers ect...The easiest way around this is to install XP onto as
single drive with no other HDDs in the machine, that way the boot loader and
system are on the same drive, and it is easily swapable.
Usually a Hard Drive is connected as Primary Master.
In the store they connected it as Secondary Master while the CD is
connected as Primary Master.
I think it may have to do with the fact that a virtual floppy is
created and that this could cause problems when the HD would be connected as
Primary
Master and the cd as first boot.
No, the virtual floppy isn't created until you actually boot from a CD/DVD,
and again this is to do with the way the boot image is handled on the CD.
I've noticed it when I've created a bootable CD/DVD using a bootable floppy
as the source boot image when writing the CD.
As the CD is now the Primary Master and first boot, there is not
that message anymore at start up of the system.
Were you booting from a CD when the message appeared?
Yes.
But again this happened in the store (I has asked to put
the cd-rom as first boot , just to test).
<snip.>
There is for now no problem. But I am afraid a problem could occur
if I would change cables and set the cd as first boot - because of the
virtual floppy that is created.
see above
Changing the cables will tell me whether there is a problem or not.
But if there will be one, I won't probably be able to solve it.
In the store they have been obliged to work via windows to set up the
bios (Linux was installed but they couldn't set up the bios properly
via Linux).
The OS has got nothing to do with setting up the BIOS, you don't even need
an OS to play with the BIOS.
That's why I'd like
to learn as much as possible before eventually changing the cables.
Well, whatever, but you are really overcomplicating things, after swapping
the cables all you need to do is go to the BIOS and change the boot order,
maybe get an old computer to fiddle with, or leave it alone completely.
Thanks for the detailed input.
