The odd thing that I am experiencing is that the system drive on sata #1 is
recognized and works even though there is also an unexplained entry for a
missing drive volume of the same size. On the other hand, there is only one
entry for the storage drive on sata #2 but it is listed as unallocated space
and is unaccessable.
It is possible that your problems w computer #1 might be related to the
Hitachi drives. Sometime ago I had purchased a 250g Hitachi drive for my
computer and I was unable to get it or another Hitachi replacement drive to
run. While I was recently trying to trace the source of the most recent
problems, I ran into some posts on incompatibilities between asus
motherboards and Hitachi drives. I can't remember exactly where these posts
were buried but I seem to want to think they were somewhere on the asus site
in one of their faq's.

I have suffered something quite similar. A set of 2 Hitachi 250 Gig
Deskstars operating as data drives on an XP machine (ASUS K8V) and
not in raid configuration...The first drive after a reboot shows up
in drive manager as unallocated while the other one is still
operable.
Another computer (ASUS A8N SLI Premium) using a PATA 120 gig drive
as the boot drive has now apparantly lost its partition info and is
unaccessable. I wonder if there is somesort of bug going around that
has this result as its payload.
Let me know if you get anything back from ASUS.
