If you go to "Device Manager", and examine the "Computer" entry,
does it show "Standard PC" or does it say "ACPI ..." ? It almost
sounds like the wrong HAL (hardware abstraction layer) is being
used. I think with "Standard PC", you have to use the power
switch to turn it off.
I have "PC Multiprocessors ACPI", and I don't know if it's possible to add something else.
