USB Problem

I have Windows XP Pro installed, SP2. I have tried various BIOS
settings and cannot get the USB ports to work. They are recognised by
the system but connecting usb devices has no effect. I'm also confused
about the jumper picture on page 1-17 of the E1884 manual. There are
two jumpers that need to be positioned for +5V or +5VSB. It's not clear
whether the jumpers should be vertical or horizontal, as the block of
two is completed coloured so you can't make out the orientation.

There are two separate 1x3 sets of pins. The center pin is
the common pin, the end pins are selectors. One end pin is
+5V and the other end pin is +5VSB. Either place a jumper so
it connects +5V to the device, or place the jumper so it connects
+5VSB to the device.

+5V (to dev) +5VSB

Since the USB connectors are arranged in dual stacks, the two
corresponding sets of 1x3 pins ar placed next to one another.
This would be the factory default for a typical motherboard,
and leaves the USB device unpowered when the computer is
sleeping in S3. The alternative position, connects +5VSB to
the device(s), and allows functions like waking from sleep,
as +5VSB is running as long as the switch is set to ON on
the back of the computer.

IDE Drives

I have one SATA drive attached to SATA2, an IDE drive attached to
PRI_IDE and a CDROM attached to SEC_IDE. The BIOS recognises the SATA
drive and the PRI_IDE drive but not the CDROM. I cannot seem to get all
three (as primary drives) recognised by the BIOS. I can't attach one
drive as a slave because the cabling in my case won't reach between
Master and Slave.

Any ideas?

You could get an adapter kit, and mount the 3 1/2" drive in a
5 1/4" bay, just below the optical drive. That should allow a single
cable to reach both. The following item screws to the sides of
a hard drive, to make it fit a 5 1/4" bay - you still have to
use the sliders that come with your computer case, to finish
the job. At one time, a "retail" drive came with a ribbon cable,
and two of those U shaped cross-section pieces of metal, so the
drive could be mounted in a 5 1/4" bay. Now, most drives ship in
"OEM" form, so you lose the "free' goodies that come with
retail packaging. And you end up buying them like this:

What kind of cables are you using ? Are they both 80 wire cables,
or is one 80 wires and the other 40 wires ? The box contents for
your motherboard, only mentions one 80 wire cable, so you must be
using a second cable obtained from somewhere else. I just fiddle
with that stuff till it works, trying Cable Select (CS) or Master,
and see what happens. CS is supposed to only work with 80 wire
cables (due to your typical 80 wire cable, having the wire snipped
in the right place).
