Could the BIOS on the mainboard not support a 965?
Did you check here, to see what minimum BIOS is required ?

There may be a paper label glued to the flash chip, and you
can compare what is printed on there, to the CPUsupport list
for the motherboard.
The BIOS chip has a sticker that says 0302. The site says that I need
0405. The site also indicates that I could boot with a 955, but I'm
not gonna shell out $1000 just to be able to flash the correct BIOS
for the 965. Should I call ASUS tech support? Will they send me a
new BIOS chip with the correct version? I guess what I'm asking is
"what's the fastest way to a new BIOS?"
1) Intel Celeron D 326 2.53Ghz Prescott 533MHz FSB LGA 775 $53
Use a cheap Celeron to enable you to flash the board.
Obtaining one locally, reduces your wait to hours.

2) http://www.badflash.com/howmuch.html
New chip $24.99 (up to 4Megabit: what if you have an 8 Mbit Intel brd?)
1-2 Day US Express Mail: $14.40
3) Asus in North America offers a service. Details are here,
and presumably contacting Tech Support, will be able to verify
the details.

I found reference to (3) by searching for "7100 Intermodal Drive",
as that address was mentioned in another posting about the
Asus BIOS dept not too long ago. But I really want to see a
web page with that info, as getting an email from Asus
tech support with the current details, could be "hit n' miss".
HTH,
Paul
