Running a P4C800 and upgrading to 4gb ram from 2gb.
I used Kingston valueram in 2 sets of matched 1gb cards.
After install I see only 3072MB of ram in bios display.
The Asus manual mentiones that when all sockets hold 1gb cards the
system may only detect 3+ GB but then goes on to say nearly 4GB.
What I see is missing 1 entire GB I see 3072MB in the bios.
Can someone verify if this is normal and what the manual means or what.
Checking with Belarc advisor workup, there is 4 cards found of 1gb
each.
How can I verify what I'm actually getting here.
You could test with memtest86+ from www.memtest.org.
Memtest usually reports some vital statistics on the test screen.
And you can also read docs like this one.
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/4GB_Rev1.pdf
Interesting reading... I just foolishly believed the lying literture
that claims expandable to 4gb.
Here is one Linux community user's experience with the topic.
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/linux/kernel/517508
Also intereresting and sort of answers another question I thought of.
In the linux thread one test setup was:
A1=1GB B1=512 A2=1GB B2=512
That looks appealing to me because I bought the 4gb with the intent to
test it out then by 4more for a twin machine.
If the above scenario is functional I might at least be able to
stretch my 4gb purchase over both machines reusing some of the old 512
cards. And end up with 3gb on both.
However some tests I ran with software I had on hand showed that setup
to be pretty sub-optimal.
I haven't tried Memtest86+ yet but did try one test. I'm not sure if
this is valid at all but I tried benchmarking using `Fresh Diagnose'
memory benchmarking tool simply because I had it installed.
I found that with all 4gb installed the score was much higher at
38.000+ (I didn't save the results but recall it was a bit over
38,000)
Whereas with 3 1GB cards installed it was 26,000+ and with 2 1GB
cards and 2 512 cards it was lowest at 21,000+
(They were arranged in pairs so that both 1gb cards were on black
recepticles and both 512 cards on blue.
Can you venture a guess if the `Fresh Diagnose' memory benchmarking
tool is up to anything. Or even if that type of test is likely to
show what actuall usage would be like?
PS-I'll be testing with memtest86+ later today... and will report
back. But after reading some about it, I'm not sure I understand what
the results mean.
Is it simply that a specific amount of memory is found or are the test
results able to predict what actual usage will be like?
