Try the WD 133 on the 'problem' IDE port. If it works fine, return the
Maxtor. Many Maxtor drives do not agree with nF4 chip-sets and Maxtor
either cannot or will not fix the problem. Hopefully Seagate will not
be pulled down by their (unwise) Maxtor acquisition. Hopefully, they
will be prepared to can a bunch of the Maxtor design and QC teams.
The nF4 problems are just the latest in a series of Maxtor
"successes".

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I did try this and the machine would
boot with the WD 133 anywhere. I hadn't thought of the condition you
described, as I had it in my mind that it had to be a SATA related problem.
I have now installed the Maxtor as a back-up drive in an A8V PATA/IDE boot
system and it worked fine there. I guess it worked out OK except I now have
an expensive SATA drive doing mundane data storage when I had intended to
use it as the main boot drive in my next system. I hadn't heard of the
issue you described. I bought the Maxtor since it was very inexpensive
after rebate. I have heard not a peep from their tech-support group. I
guess I'll treat this as a lesson learned and not buy any more of their
stuff.
