I've selected the Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe with 2GB of the recommended
Corsair twin 3500 memory, a BFG 7900GTX video card, and a Western
Digital 74GB Raptor 10k-rpm SATA drive.
I've got it all put together, everything seems to work unitl I try in
install WinXP Pro.
For the first 6 hours of the evening, no matter what I tried, upon
booting from the WinXP CD, I'd see the message that indicates that
"Setup was inspecting my system" or some such text. At that point I'd
lose video (the montior stayed on, just I didn't see anything and the
CD would spin down).
I broke down and put in my old 120GB non-10k-rpm WD sata drive in, and
WinXP setup ran fine as expected and successfully completed. I
plugged in the Raptor, and immediately started getting blue screens.
I unplugged the 120GB, plugged inthe Raptor, and somehow this time I
was able to run the initial install of WinXp, but after the first
reboot, the computer doesn't boot.
I've tried disabling everything in Bios. I've disable sound, usb, the
Silicom Image Raid, the SATA connections I'm not using... I've used
the Asus CD to make driver disks and tried installing them when
Windows asks to press F6 if you want to install 3rd part drivers...
I've tried to install WinXp without adding those drivers.
I've plugged the raptor into my other comupter and formatted it, it
works fine. The other computer is a Shuttle XPC.
I tried enabling the Silicon Image RAID and then tried installing XP
to the Raptor for there... no luck.
I'm at wits end, I don't know what to try. Any advice would be
appreciated, Thank you.
Go to the Device Manager and open the NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA
Controller Properties page and click on the Channel where your Raptor
is located. Uncheck the Enable Command Queuing if it is checked. This
is the dreaded NCQ that crashes many an nForce4 mobo. If this does
not solve your problem, there may be a drive firmware issue. I had to
pull a 500GB Seagate from my A8N32 system because of 'black' screens
after the XP splash screen. I put into an Intel system and it runs
just fine. I just chalked it up to early firmware revision since I
got it as soon as it hit retail and others have installed it since on
the A8N32 with nary a problem. I replaced it with a 150GB Raptor and
as long as NCQ is disabled, it runs fine. HTH.
