Hye

I had previously reported a similar problem where the graphics of my
Asus A8N VM CSM was appearing in a broken and tiled fashion, if the
hardware accelerated graphics was used for rendering. Am unable to post
an update on that thread, hence this new thread.

(Never got around to thanking you Paul there. Apologies and Thanks for
your help)

Well, It seemed to have been a manufacuturing defect as per various
posts I read on the Asus forums and so tried sending it back for
replacement

To cut a long story short - The new botherboard (err-montherboard) came
in yesterday (finally -after two months of sending the old one back)

And am now struck with a new problem! Any attempt at using the video
acceleration features - such as during games, and video playback would
result in instant freeze of the machine for which i have to reboot the
same. Somehow linux (Xwindows) also refuses to run (But that is a
different story - Lets concentrate on getting it working under windows
first! More urgent for me).

I am currently able to function against such unexpected freezes
(accidental triggering a video etc) by turning off graphic
accelerations - resulting in all the games refusing to function. But
atleast i am able to get my work done.

Would appreciate if anybody can help me out of this latest problem. I
seriously dont want to send the board back - I have suffered enough the
previous time just to get one back. Perhaps i shall have to spend on a
new board :-( and just forget this one as a bad dream.

Or perhaps get myself a video card (any recommendations?)

Can anybody provide a clue on what is going on here?

My Machine specs are as under:
Memory: - Transcend -DDR SDRAM of 1Gbs Model - ts128mld64v4j

CPU -Z shows the memory running at a
cas latency of 3,
raas to cas
delay of 3
and ras precharge of3
cycle time of 8,
bank cycle time of 11
and dram idle timer of 16 clocks

(What ever the above figures meant! Have included it here in case
somebody can figure out if my memory (which is shared by the mobo, is
at fault - Though memtest does not say anything like that)

BIOS:
AMI Bios Update - 0702

Am using the latest video driver - downloaded yesterday. uninstalled
the old one and installed this one. Do i have to uninstall the
forceware drivers too?

Hope the above information is adequate for somebody to help me out!

Thanks in advance.

I couldn't access the Asus Forums, so had to use comments at
Newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?Item=N82E16813131570

18% of reviewers rate A8N-VM CSM poor or very poor. The A8N5X, by
comparison, only has ~4% of people who rated that board poor or
very poor.

In the reviews themselves, no one has had quite the same symptoms
as you've had. It would seem that upgrading to the latest BIOS
would help with some of the problems other people have had.

Maybe Asus has sent back the same board you gave them. They may have
soldered a new Northbridge on it (the graphics controller is in
there), and maybe what was really wrong with it, was the voltage
supply feeding the Northbridge isn't right. But if their testing
procedure is not capable of identifying 100% of problems before
it leaves the factory, then what would be the point of RMAing
it again ?

Seriously, I'd look at another motherboard, as it seems this one
is going to leave you miserable for several more months.

The A8N5X is $80. It doesn't have video built-in, so that will
cost you another $50 or so, to get something comparable. One
compensation, is you can get DVI/S-video/VGA connectors on
the video card, and chances are much better that the video
will work :-)

The reviews are much more positive, and this board will be
less of a gamble than the board you've got.

What you could do, is buy a video card for the A8N-VM CSM and
see if your video problems are solved. Flash up to the latest
BIOS, if you can manage that. If the board is still behaving
badly, then toss it in the trash and start shopping for
a replacement. Since you'll have the video card at that point,
you can shop for a replacement without built-in video.
