I found something that worked... Instead of using S3 suspend, I used S1.
Sure, the fans keep running, but at least it comes out of standby then.
(Besides, my A7V333 always had the fans continue to run anyway.) I'll
continue messing with it, but if I can't get it to work, I'll just run it in
S1 only.
I see one report of a similar problem with S3 here, but the author
doesn't report which BIOS he is using.

when I try to resume it from stand by (by moving the mouse) only
the hard disc starts working but the monitor stays black and doesn't
turn on. No metter what I do monitor stays that way. Only when I pull
out the power supply and put it back again the monitor turns on and
the computer works OK. What should I do???"
You could get a copy of dumppo.exe and check the status of ACPI
support that way. But the machine would have refused to go into
standby, if there was some problem at the OS level, so this is
more likely to be an Asus problem.
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/products/Oemtest/v1.1/WOSTest/Tools/Acpi/dumppo.exe
Another test you could try, is remove any PCI cards and see if
S3 works properly with just the basics in the machine.
In any case, I suggest you report this to Asus tech support, and
while they may be slow as molasses to put out a new BIOS release,
at least then there will be some record of their still not having
fixed ACPI issues properly. I would still want S3 working on my
system, especially as my electricity bill is scheduled to go up
16% in the next month or two.
