John,
How did you set up the 3 - SATA drives configuration? I also have 3
HDDs currently on RAID5 but performance is not what I desired.
I want to configure a RAID0 on 2 drives and just have 1 standalone...
is this possible with all drives connected to nF4 controller? Or do I
have to connect the 1 standalone drive to the SI Image controller?

I have to completetly turn off the system again.

Then the plextor unit is seen in bios and then
in windows xp. That is the ONLY way it will work.
I must do this everytime I start up the system.
Other than that, the dvd burner works great.
as does the rest of the system. I tried moving the
sata cable to the sata1 sata2 sata3 sata4 connector,
but it makes no difference. same results. I love the
plextor unit, but this double starting can't be good
for the system board or components to have the
extra startup surges. I have no idea what I can do
to resolve this other than leaving the system on
all the time. I need to get to the root of the problem.
Can anyone help ?
Thanks Mike
motherboards continues.
Lots of folks have had compatibility issues that they can't fix. That
said, though, the glitch might be with the nVidia IDE drivers rather
than the motherboard, itself. If you're not using nVidia RAID, and
you have the nForce drivers installed for the SATA connection, you
might try "rolling back" the driver to the Microsoft version that XP
installs during its setup process.
If you do have a RAID setup, but don't have the latest nForce drivers,
an upgrade might help.
I'd certainly not tolerate the situation you have now. Like you say,
it must be a real stress on your computer. If there's no driver fix
available, I'd sell the 716SA and get an OEM NEC or Pioneer IDE
burner.

To further clarify my original reply.
Only ATAPI ( DVD/CD) drives have problems with many
SATA compatible motherboards. It is obvious from the OPs
description that the problem is all to do with BIOS recognition
of the SATA DVD-drive, nothing to do with the drivers. If the BIOS
does not recognise a device on BOOT, the system software will
not be aware of its presence and will ignore it.
BTW, the A8N32-SLI nForce driver (current is v6.85) works flawlessly
with SATA hard-disks. I have 3 in my system, two in a RAID 0
configuration. Nary a problem, and I check all my system builds with a
complete "surface" disk check ( which can take many hours of
continuous disk access) after configuring the system including
installation of the nForce IDE driver.
