Readings are with the PC Probe II which match with the BIOS readings:

CPU temp = 114°
Motherboard Temp = 100°

If those temps are at idle, then the CPU temp seems a bit high.

I have an x2 3800+ overclocked 25% in a room that sits between 68-70f,
and it idles about 25f lower than yours with the stock cooler - around
97f. With the new Zalman 9500 cooler installed, it idles a bit lower at
33c or 92f.

At full load, my x2 3800+ hits 60c or 140f with the stock cooler. With
the Zalman 9500 cooler, it runs about 48c fully loaded on both cores
using Prime95 torture test set to produce the most heat.

Running my CPU at stock speeds, the temps drop several degrees more.

I always wonder if I applied the correct amount of thermal grease and
seeing
what kind of temps you are seeing will let me know if I'm in the ballpark.
I
believe I am but being the curious type.......

You may have too much thermal compound between the CPU and cooler. Too
much is almost as bad as not enough.

Bill,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I took the cooler off to check if I
had applied to much Artic Silver and it looked okay. Started cleaning things
off to reapply and noted that the top of the CPU had a nick on the top - as
though someone stuck an awl into it. Could feel a ridge with my
fingernail --- not good. Pulled the CPU out and got out my ceramic
sharpening stones (I do woodworking...;-) and lapped the top of that CPU
down.

Course I had to bend a pin or two in order to make the evening
interesting... Got that fixed, re-applied the thermal grease and spread a
thin coat using a single-edged blade. Place the cooler back on top and
seated it by slightly twisting it back and forth to compress the compound
and then tightened it down.

Fired it up and I'm typing this as I'm monitoring the temps. Only been on
for about 30 mins but the board is reading 100°F and the CPU is at 109° at
idle - and holding but I suspect after awhile it will creep back up.

Since I'll be tearing things apart again tomorrow to install a new 320gb WD,
I think I'll install the stock cooler just for giggles and see what happens
with it - compared to the Zalman.

Appreciate your time and I'll post my findings - other's may be interested.
