K7M mobos were some of the first Slot A boards available for the then
new Athlons. When they first came out, they were slightly more than
engineering samples. It was like pulling teeth to get one. It seemed
like Asus didn't want to release them. Asus made a few K7M's for HP.

Rumor I heard was Asus was afraid of Intel would screwing them over
somehow if they shipped too many AMD boards, the first K7M's even came
in a plain white boxes. I ran one for 3 years, no problems.

At the time, Intel was claiming that they were having problems
delivering chipsets for their Slot1 processors and since they were the
only game in town they tried pressuring both mobo and PC makers into not
working with AMD. They were also trying to keep other chipset producers
from making Slot1 chipsets (VIA, Ali, SIS and a few others they didn't
go anywhere).
There wasn't a whole lot of CPU options for low end to mid range PCs. HP
was probably the first major US PC maker to bring out an Athlon model
followed by Compaq. AMD systems were sold as economy models. Dell had
announced that they were going to be releasing AMD PCs but then changed
their mind in 2000. They are still kicking around releasing AMD servers.

Two of my K7M's came in white boxes. I live in the Bay Area and worked
in the manufacturing side of the industry. I got them "through the back
door" from a reseller located a few blocks away from Asus' US
headquarters.
