I have looked at all the SATA boot related posts here over the past 3 months
and can't find the answer to this one in tose posts:
This refers to a P4P800-E. I have a new SATA drive that I want to make the
boot drive.
I loaded the Promise-RAID-SATA drivers from the CDROM on the old ATA IDE
boot drive. I then used Partition Magic to copy the partition, same size, to
the SATA drive. I made the partition active on the SATA drive. It has no
other partitions, and there are no disk errors on it. It loooks fine as a
third drive--identical to the boot ATA IDE drive.
If I leave the two IDE drives in on the primary IDE channel, and the SATA on
the 1st SATA connection, the computer boots to a choice of Windows XP or
Windows XP (Copy 1). I can boot to either drive. The SATA drive is Copy 1. I
have even made the partition inactive on the first IDE drive. The SATA Drive
now is the C: drive.
If I unplug complertely the two IDE HDs on the Primary ATA IDE, the SATA
drive will simply not boot. It just hangs, with a blinking cursor. I have
tried every configuration possible in the BIOS with Promise on, Promise off,
with Promise as IDE, with Promise as RAID, etc., and of course I have
changed the boot priority accordingly.
I can boot to the SATA drive perfectly well, so long as the two IDE drives
are attached to the primary (I have two CDRoms on the Secondary.)
I want to get rid of the first IDE drive because it is very noisy --that was
the reason or getting the SATA drive. But I can't take the first IDE drive
out!
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Ken
