Bill,

You hit the jackpot!! I had two extra standoffs in the case. I removed them,
put all the screws back in, put in the cards, turned it on, and voila! It
works perfectly, USB ports and all.

So--everything everyone said in this thread was absolutely correct, and
there were really no internal contradictions about the grounding, etc.

I think the only reason no one suggested the possibility of extra standoffs
earlier was that they all assumed no one on this newsgroup would be that
flaky. :-)

Maybe I should call ASUS and suggest they remind people about extra
standoffs. Of course, their method of covering all the standoffs with
electrical tape would have worked, too, but it wasn't necessary.
