I think you can plug it in. But do not expect a miracle :-)
It will end up running slower than 3GHz, even if you
manage to get it to run. In terms of the odds, going from
most likely to start in the BIOS, to least likely to work:
1) 3.06GHz/FSB533/512KB cache (FSB533 is not too much of a stretch)
2) 3.0GHz/FSB800/512KB cache (what will the clockgen do ?)
3) 3.0GHz/FSB800/1MB cache (clockgen or power consumption ?)
