CD boot difficulties: P4P800SE

I have a P4P800SE with an Adapted 29160 SCSI controller, two hard
disks on the primary IDE channel, and a DVD reader and a DVD writer on
the secondary channel. I'm booting from the first IDE hard drive (the
SCSI drive is just for data). I have no performance tweaks set up in
the BIOS. The BIOS is version 1008.

I got this MB and CPU recently when my old one died. When I tried to
boot the XP setup disk to upgrade XP for the new MB, it froze at the
"Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration ..."
point. I tried removing the SCSI controller and this worked; I got to
"repair" the installation (after the EULA). I installed the MB
drivers and all is well; no problems for a month or so.

But, when I try to boot from a BartPE CD
(http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) it freezes early on after displaying
the white "thermometer" at the bottom of the screen; the white line
never moves across the "thermometer". This happens even if I remove
the SCSI controller, the two hard drives, and the DVD writer (leaving
only the drive on which I'm attempting to boot).

I had the same problem before updating the BIOS; I forget what the
original version was.

Anybody got any ideas why this is happening?
