Dont know about the random beeps, but the AC97 does beep anytime you change
the main volume level slider, in recognition I guess. This is true regardless
if everything else is muted. If you are not getting normal sound (chimes,
etc), make sure the wave mixer output is not muted (same AC97 volume control
panel). The Sounds tab will test those chime sounds (Right click taskbar
speaker icon, select Adjust Audio Properties, then Sounds tab).
