Hi All,
Doing the mobo selection waltz, I got the door prize
with this motherboard. A true crock!
After months of searching fixes for the audio chip,
and still failing to have it boot, I am greeted tonight with
"NTLDR is missing". Investigation returns "drive not detected".
This board (purchased Christmas 2008) has always had some misgivings booting this c:\drive - a 80GB WD SATA - with halts in the boot often occurring
and an overly slow "save and shutdown".
Now, it looks like it has eaten the drive completely!
I am ridding the system of this parasite, now!
My problem is, time is of the essence. I am in the middle of a huge project with a looming end time.
So I ask my peers.. where do I go to replace the board.
Long being an ASUS fan I am loathe to move away but I understand we live in fast changing times.
So is it ASUS again or something else?
Cost is not the prime consideration.
"Surround" sound is not required but "on board" audio is.
Prime criteria is the ability to fully utilize the RAM and CPU
mounted, and a high end communication with the graphic card.
Use of this system is in rendering 3D builds.
If I could beg some informed responses on a choice
for the new hardware the lesson would truly be taught.
On board and as expected service to the mobo is:
ASUS 9600GT 512M PCIe Video Card 3X500GB Samsung 7200rpm SATA HDD DDR2 4GB Corsair 800MHz PC6400 RAM TwinX Kit Intel S775 Core 2 Q9400 Quad-Core CPU
Best advice please on that elusive "good" mobo,
and do not spare the horses :)

If you search Newegg, using "Best Rating" to sort the results,
you'll notice some Gigabyte boards at the top of the list.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280%201070509908&srchInDesc=ddr2&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=False&Order=RATING
But the thing is, in the last few years, people are using a
"four star" scale, to judge Asus, rather than "five star".
Which means, even when a user finds the board to be fully
functional, they still might not give it five stars.
Gigabyte has had the odd stretch of bad products, so they're
not immune to bloopers. In some cases, it's the old thing
about needing five BIOS releases to get things right.
So you can "shop by ratings", if you want to narrow the
field that way, but beware that the rating system is not
a level playing field.
You want to read the ratings, to see if a number of people
share the same drop-dead issues. For example, on some Asus
motherboards, it was LAN chips dying in large numbers.
You'll notice a fair number of people bought this one,
and it has a pretty good rating. It uses DDR2 RAM.
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX

With regard to sound, I don't bother with the build-in
any more. I have my trusty $7 PCI sound card, and it
works just fine as I move it from system to system.
Relatively small driver footprint, and no "special
features". I tried the onboard RealTek, but just
didn't like the driver package. The nice thing about
my trusty PCI sound card, is there are drivers available
for all the OSes I use.
