sort of fear is completely unfounded.
To you? Not likely, I'd be quite happy to see you get infected - which can be easily accomplished just by accessing the wrong sites in IE. Heck, some of these places can even distribute their malware/trojans with the help of google cache, which I've personally encountered on a number of occasions. Just have a look around the sites that list software keys for people who have lost theirs.
