I'd suggest you just get a new power supply, and skip the power supply

DVD burner tray won't open? Yet one more symptom that points to a bad power
supply. Just replace it and be done with it. You should have a spare power
supply on hand anyway, for JUST this reason. So buy yourself a new power
supply to get your system up quick, then exchange the old one for a good
spare. -Dave
Thanks, but I'd really rather know for sure before I start ordering.
On the off chance the PSU is OK and what I need is a new motherboard
(plus video card and RAM since I'd need to move up to a current type
board), replacing the PSU first would add to down time. Anyway, the
tester is only $13 at a local computer shop.
Whatever the outcome, I will take your advice and buy another PSU to
have a spare on hand.
Speaking of which... any suggestions on a new PSU? Corsair OK? This
one looks pretty good.
