You can extand range with a usb antenna and software.
for a few bucks more you can get a really good antenna.

When I wanted to improve my wireless connectivity around the house, which
is big and 2 story with many rooms, I bought a cheap wired ethernet
wireless access point on sale - Airlink AP421W - and found/used a point
much more centrally located (with few walls to penetrate or corners to go
around) than the router's location (in a corner computer room's corner
under a desk) and ran an ethernet connection to the central open spot and
connected the AP there.
Everything is fine now at minimal cost.
