Any ideas why new 512 vid card only allows 1024x768?

Everything is brand new:
Intel D 3.4 Ghz cpu
3 GB DDR2 ram
microatx mobo
brand new fresh xp + sp2 install

literally the only thing NOT new here, is the monitor, which is a 15"
lcd

Then I install my XFXForce video card (512MB DDR3, Dual-DVI), install
the latest drivers for it from xfxforce.com and... the largest
resolution I can get is 1024 x 768?? Obviously this isn't right. I can
a way better resolution with the on-board video.

But I dont know what else to try. It's the latest and greatest driver.
And I can't blame any other software on the system (its a fresh xp
install).

I don't know what else to try. A friend suggested I try reinstalled
windows with the vid card already inserted this time and see what
happens, but I cant imagine that would help much. Guess we'll see.

I appreciate any idea's anyone may have.
