mini-ATX/ITX MB w/AM2 questions/recommendations?

I need to build a new desktop PC. My current one is circa 2001 w/its
last BIOS update from 2002 (no more available). Although it has
served be well there are things it cannot/won't do.
I have been a big fan of Shuttle XPC for a number of years especially
AMD based. So, when this time came around, it seemed like a
no-brainer. I purchased their SP68? G6 box with an AM2 socket and
some components (Athlon 64 X2 4800+, 2x2GB DDR2 RAM, Seagate 500GB
SATA 3.0 and OEM Win XP SP2c.
Upon arrival I anxiously assembled it and then started to configure
it. What I found out was this system, through its MB and BIOS had so
many options disabled I couldn't use it.
Some of the issues:
- it had no PS2 Kbd/Mouse ports. No big deal because I can connect
USB versions. But, USB is NOT compatible with my existing KVM
connecting ALL my other XPC's (4 of them) to my single LCD & wireless
Kbd and mouse. Shuttle claims a ps10 adapter but try and buy/find
one.
Next, I am really a Linux guy. So I tried to load from a new Linux
distro. Trying several different flavors/distros it always locked up
very near the beginning of the process and I had to pull the power
plug to regain control. Research shows that there was a problem with
the way ACPI was implemented and/or reacting with the Linux. So, turn
it off. However, this is one of the areas that is grayed out in the
BIOS and Shuttle confirms "its NOT changeable".
I had several other issues with Win XP regarding networking and I
finally gave up.
This box was not only a disaster but technically speaking... a piece
of crap!
So that brings me to where I am now -
I need to purchase and build a SFF desktop that has 1) MB with a pair
of PS2 ports; SATA, DDR2 and an AM2 socket ( I would like to use the
components that I already purchased to minimize my additional cost)
2) fully configurable BIOS INCLUDING being able to disable ACPI as
well as most everything else.
Any recommendations I will surely look at.
Thanks for reading and thanks for any recommendations anyone has.
