HI,
A friend gave me this PC last week and I've come to the end of the line with
it and would appreciate any ideas.
It's a HP Pavillian 6746c with a 700mhz intel Celeron chip in it. It was
all there except for a hard drive and the outer case cover.
I tried 4 different hard drives in it, one with win95, two with win98, and
one with XP. All drives are known good and working like they should.
Here's what happens,
the system boots, and posts. During the boot the bios identifies the hard
drive.
Then when it goes to get the os, it says bad system disk no OS found,
replace system disk.
I swapped out the memory, the ide cables, the optical, and of course the
drives.
I get the same error everytime.
Suggestions welcomed.
Thanks.

AL

ps: I tried to load linux from a cd, but that didn't work. Same error msg.
also, with the 2nd eide cable removed, ie, now no opticals, still the
same message.

I found this specs page for your machine:

HP Pavilion PC Model 6746C - Product Specifications and What Ships in
the Box (US/Canada):
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=bph06042

No floppy drive is listed, so it looks like it is not a standard
inclusion. Does an FDD show up in the Standard CMOS setup screen?

The original HD was 30GB, so maybe your BIOS has a 32GB limit. Are
your HDs larger than this? If so, try limiting their capacity with a
jumper.

For example, this is Seagate's 32GB support page:
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=32_GB_-_33.8_GB_Limitation&vgnextoid=dacb5b1142aec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

FWIW, the information at the following URLs suggests that you have a
Phoenix BIOS.

HP Pavilion Cognac BIOS Update:
