When it's on and on it's side, if i then stand it up, the pc locks up and nothing can be done expect hold the power button and power off.

Maybe you are catching some wire against the case or touching some part of the board to something that grounds it out when you lift it up. lift it very slowly and look to see if anything touches when you are lifting it up.
