I need to setup a new computer rather quick and since my last built
was almost 5 yrs ago, I have been out of the loop as to what is the
best config. for my purpose.
I do quite a bit of graphics manipulation with PhotoShop, and some
video manips. Can someone suggest a cpu mb combo that will serve my
purpose?
I know I sound like "what so I buy", but since the old rig is going on
the fritz, I'm afraid I won't have too much time to do the research
from the ground up. I wold really appreciate some suggestions so I
can start look.
Dual core processor at 3GHz - E8400. A core here is equal to a Pentium 4 at 4.5GHz+

Second alternative is quad core at 2.4GHz - Q6600. A core is equal to a Pentium 4 at 3.6GHz+
Purchase G0 stepping, rather than B3. G0 draws 10W less power than B3, and uses 95W max.

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS4 LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX $170

A cheaper motherboard with minimal capabilities is this one.
Add a PCI Firewire card, to get a Firewire (IEEE 1394) connector.
GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX $67
Northbridge doesn't have a fan, and may need additional air cooling.

4GB total RAM. $70. DDR2-800 5-5-5-18. I'm not a big fan of fancy
RAM, so as long as the reviewers say it is OK, then take it. Best if
installed in matched pairs. 2GB sized modules selected, in case you
buy the $67 motherboard that only has two RAM slots. A 32 bit OS
won't be able to use it all, so your free memory might be reported
as 3.2GB or so. For $70, I don't think it really matters.

For a video card, this is a fairly random selection. Price goes up
on video cards, as a function of their game playing power. I wanted
something which could drive two VGA monitors or two DVI monitors.
And when using the DVI (digital) monitor capability, the ability
to drive a 30" Apple Cinema display. That is "dual link" (higher
bandwidth digital connection) capability. This also comes with a
Zalman GPU cooler (looks like a VF700 perhaps), saving the trouble
of fitting one yourself. Depending on your own tastes, you can easily
find a PCI Express x16 interface card for $50, if you only have
ordinary needs for monitors.
GIGABYTE GV-NX86T256H-ZL GeForce 8600GT 256MB $96

For a power supply, I picked something middle of the road. The
above system might draw 250W on a bad day, of which the 12V total
loading is about 16 amps. This should cover it OK. The only thing
I didn't like in picking this one out, is I cannot find an
efficiency rating anywhere for it.
ENERMAX Whisper II EG465P-VE FMA(24) ATX12V 460W $70

That should get you started.
