It's impossible to get it wrong. The mb end is blue and the other end
has 2 connectors for master and slave drive close together.
That's the only explanation that I could come up with that fit the
symptoms. I had no idea as to your experience or understanding. Sorry
if I offended you.
BTW, you did write that you "thought the wiring was the same; straight
through; on both", which led me to wonder whether you cared about the
orientation of the connectors.
One other thing you might like to try is to select Legacy instead of
Enhanced IDE in your BIOS setup, if it exists. I suspect that it won't
make any difference, though.
