I bought a new 500 gig hard drive today. It came with an IDE cable
with a blue tip and the fine, tiny wires flat ribbon cable. Well it
didn't work with that cable. I have another cable like that that
came with another harddrive a few years ago. It don't work either.
Only the old fashioned IDE ribbon cables with the fat wires work. I
thought the wiring was the same; straight through; on both. So,
what is it that I don't know?

Do not use the older, 40 wire cable...it will slow your system down.
Chances are you just have the drive jumpered wrong
with the 80 wire cable. I don't understand it. Except the possibility
that both 80 wire cable I have are defective including the one that
came with the Seagate drive.
This has been mentioned before, but you do have the blue connector
plugged into the motherboard and the end connector plugged into the new
disk drive, with the drive jumpered as master (some drives have no
jumpers for master setting, so whatever is appropriate for your drive).
That should work. If not, there's something very odd with the MB
controller. It's possible the 80 wire cables are bad, but it's very,
very, very unlikely.
