While I realize there are better memory test programs than Memtest86,
it's probably the best free one. So, any suggestions on how long or
for how many passes I should run it?

Yes, Memtest86+ (also free). Seriously, it recognizes more CPUs and
seems to be just as good, if not better than, Memtest86.

Recently, MemTest86+ v. 1.70 failed to detect errors in a module that
were found by MemTest86 3.3 and Gold Memory 5.07. Gold Memory v. 6.xx
also didn't report any errors.

The longest that MemTest86 has taken to find an error in one of my
modules is 4-5 hours.
