You got to the "recovery" console the repair installation is further along
in the installation process...but only if you have a "full retail" XP not
some companies recovery version of XP.......so what specificaly do you have
for a XP CD???
Go back to the website I posted for the repair install and you will see

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the info. I have the cd that came with the laptop and
ran the install, and got to the repair console, but then it devolved into
a command line screen wherein i was clueless save to an ancient
dos mbr command I remembered.
Mike
and yeah, ouch on the updates. I didn't read the links yet, so
they probable will tell me what to do in the repair console.
thanks again

If its only the operating system that crashed and if you have a XP retail
CD you can do a "repair" installation.
This saves your settings in all things and you would be up and running in
no time.....you would of course need to do all those lovely time
consuming updates all over again.

Q2....if you have Outlook 2007 on the system that you are hooked up to
you could import all of the necesary stuff to that Outlook2007

Hi,
My laptop crashed, BSOD. End of story.
Hardwares fine, OS blown.
Two questions:
Q1: Can you load XP Home over itself and not
loose data files, outlook files, etc.?
If so, yahoo! and how do?
Q 2: I pulled the drive and have it running
via the usb port on another laptop. the drive
is fine. Is there a way to get outlook 2007's
calander file off it, and load it on this laptop?
thanks for any help.
Mike
ps: I'd really like to get all of
outlook's stuff off it, and also
the stuff saved in folders in
outlook and the newsgroup reader
that's part of outlook express.
