I just built this system and when I check the CPU temp in Bios it
fluctuates between 176f and 180f. Obviously this is incorrect.

The Asus MB is brand new (even though it's outdated). The processor was
pulled from other system. The graphics card, RAM, and the PSU are all
brand new. The BIOS has the most updated version (checked ASUS website.

I replaced the original Intel CPU fan and heatsink with a new one and
still get the eroneous temps. I've checked and re-checked connections
and RTM (2 or 3 times) re the MB and everyting looks ok. I tried to
even load failsafe defaults, still same crazy temp reading.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

There's a really good utility called SiSoft Sandra. See if you can
get/borrow/buy a copy and try it. If it's possible to do so, it will
give correct readings on temperatures as well as most other parameters.

OK, I used the jumper to clear the cmos....no change. I also was able to
install WinXP by setting the temp monitor to ignore (in the BIOS). I also
installed the ASUS MB utility which shows the same temp as the BIOS. I'm
lost as what is causing this.

According to this, it is a function of the BIOS revision being used.
The older BIOS revisions report temperature properly. Later ones do not.

But even if we subtract 20C from your temps, the temps are still too hot.

Ok, I downloaded the last BIOS and still the same thing. I even went all the
way back to the first BIOS, same thing.
Thx for all the help but it looks like an RMA is my future!
