Re: can you install linux in a partition on an xp system?

I just installed Ubuntu Linux .........you might want to consider my way.
I installed a small IDE HD....60gb which cost me $35.00.
I ran the installer from within Linux (running it off the CD).
It saw the HD .....it also saw the 2 SATA drives......having written down
the ID # I picked the 60gb HD to install to.It Formated and Partitioned the
drive and then
installed itself onto the 60gb HD and did not touch any of the SATA
drives...did not transfer anything from XP ..as far as it was concerned XP
did not exsist.
And better yet as far as XP was concerned Linux did not exist. The 60gb does
show up under Admin Tools/Computer Management but not under Windows
Explorer.
Each drive had its own boot sector...I just needed to set which drive to
boot from in the BIOS...and my BIOS lets me chose when it boots by pressing
the F12 key which HD to boot from.
So when I feel like NOT dual booting anymore I will not have to play with
boot sectors or Grub .....just remove/format the drive
no mess no fuss

xp pro, 80 gig drive, 4 partitoins,: os, programs, data, and a spare of
10gigs, all ntfs
older duron AMD system: ecs mobo circa 2000 with bios same age. 1.6 g cpu
speed.
fsb is 100 mb/sec i think. 256 mb pc100 ram (2X128), burner, cd, etc.

so i got a linux ubunto disk, and before I do anything stupid I thought
I'd post here
and find out where the alligators are, if any.

I have zero experience with linux. Same with duel booting.
The disk I have will load itself into memory and
then when you reboot it's gone.
It also allows for an install, where it loads onto the hard drive.

2 questions:
uno: will it load into the empty ntfs partion?
dos: If so, how do you tell the mobo to boot to that partiton when you
want to?

Thanks,
mike
