new gaming rig based on ArsTechnica's Hot Rod spec

Ok, the old PC is about 3-4 years old (AthlonXP 3200+, AGP) and it's
time for a new build. I use my latest Windows box almost exclusively
for gaming, so here is the direction I'm heading based on ArsTechnica's
"Hot Rod" build (http://arstechnica.com/guides/buyer/guide-200706.ars/3)
but with a few upgrades:

- Asus P5B Deluxe
- Intel E6750
- 2GB PC6400 DDR2 (probably Crucial, perhaps Kingston, Corsair...)
- EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 576MHz

Performance, price, and stability are all important to me so I'm trying
to find a sweet spot on the current offerings -- a slight lean towards
performance without killing stability or going crazy on price.
Hopefully the system will be viable for 2-3 years without any upgrades
more painful than another 2GB of RAM or a new quad-core cpu when their
performance and price justify it.

A few questions:

Anandtech shows an overall 2-5% gaming performance increase (and 16-18%
improved memory bandwidth) with the P35 chipset over the P965 using the
same DDR2 RAM. I'm considering upgrading the motherboard to a P5K
Deluxe for this reason, although the $63 difference is something I'll
have to consider. Has anyone else here compared these motherboards and
formed any opinions?

The video card is already painful at $400 but I'm considering splurging
on the 8800GTX (575 MHz stock) at $517 and taking my chances on
overclocking. I'm not looking at the Ultras or SLI so I haven't gone
completely insane, but I also want to avoid having to re-buy another vid
card in 1-2 years because I saved $100 on the first purchase, a
misjudgement that has nailed me twice in the past. Has anyone here
gotten the GTS and wished they'd gone GTX, or vice versa?

TIA for any advice.
