Expanding upon the note from Paul let me instead suggest you obtain a
copy of the PCLinuxOS (aka: PCLOS) live-cd.
PCLOS is a very user friendly distribution. On first boot with the disc
in place you'll see MEMTEST. Obviously it matters not what OS you
intend to use, if the memory is bad the system won't work correctly.
Simply letting the live-cd load up will help confirm that the underlying
hardware is working properly. At this point you'll have a fully
functional and featured computer up and running. Play around with it
for awhile. Don't be surprised if you opt to use it instead of Windows.
Should you elect to make it permanent simply click on the icon labeled
"Install PCLinuxOS"
