Problem solved.
Yes I did knock something apparently. It was the motherboard 24 pin
power cable. didn't occur to me to check it especially because I
hadn't removed it - I just looked at all connections without noticing
that the end 4 pins were loose. (It is split into a 20 pin and 4 pin
connectors.)
