If you want to try Linux out, you don't have to install any software
on your hard drive. Both Ubuntu and Knoppix, have Linux "live" CDs
you can download. They are a 700MB download, which takes about an
hour to download on broadband. The download is an ISO, and as
long as you can burn an ISO 9660 CD with your burner software,
you have a Linux boot disk. You insert the CD, restart your computer,
and as long as the CD is early in your boot order, the CD will
start to boot. Within a couple minutes, you'll see the GUI for
the Linux desktop. Nothing needs to be installed on your hard
drive to do this. So you can "get a taste for free".

The desktop is graphical, so you don't have to use "command line"
to do things like web surfing, email etc.

But if you want to change the configuration, sometimes it is hard
to figure out where to find the settings and so on. And if you
have previous experience with Unix, Linux can irritate the hell
out of you. My own experience, is every time there is a small
problem, it takes an entire 8 hour work day to find a solution.
There are complex things, like rebuilding your kernel, building
tools from source and the like, and it takes a lot of reading
to figure out what to do.

The Knoppix and Ubuntu CDs will also have options for installing
to a hard drive. So if you really like what you see, you can
make a more permanent install, and have a place to store any
files you make.

Purely as a joke, you can always get one of these. I expect it
is already out of date and irrelevant...

The main value I get from my Knoppix boot disk, is I can use it
to see whether a computer can boot or not. So if you are having
hardware problems in Windows, booting up Knoppix will show you
whether the issue is just the OS, or it could be the hardware
(if both OSes are having the same kind of problems).
