I have lost my left channel sound on my homebuilt system. It has an Intel D865PERL mainboard with onboard SoundMax 4XL using AD1985 codec. I have tested the speakers on another system (good). I have plugged in working headphones into the rear (speaker) jack and the left channel is out on those also. The front panel jack works on both channels (that is the one that is connected to the mainboard pins). So it looks like the mainboard is at fault.
Is there any diagnostic test or repair that you know of to address the problem? Or is it time to get a soundcard? (or mainboard upgrade).
Could corrupted drivers cause this problem for one jack only?
Have you checked the wiring on the FP_AUDIO header ? That is
typically where the front panel wiring would connect to the
motherboard. It sounds like one of your "return" lines
have come loose. If continuity is not maintained at the
FP_AUDIO header, you can lose one or both channels on the
green rear Lineout connector.
