I am assuming you are running XP of some flavor. A lot of folks seem to use
"virus" as the culprit for a lot of things these days, but it is usually
fairly rare that it is the case. Your problem seems to be corruption of the
registry which can happen in a lot of ways. I would try a repair install of
XP first and see if that will fix the issue. Install XP just like a new
install until it gets to the point where it searches for existing Windows
installs and use the 'r' key option to repair. USUALLY, that will fix a
registry problem, but not always. Make sure to copy all your important files
to another drive or external media before you try this option. If you must
try and find if you have a virus, AVG-Free 7.5 is a free download and make
sure you update the database before you run it. No need to run it on any
other drives except your system drive. Just Google AVG Free and you should
find it right away.
