This is a little OT here I guess, but I know same people who are
knowlegeable with desktop PCs also know laptops, too. My brother has a
Dell laptop, it has only just gone past the waranty. He said he had
it on his desk, was on the power supply charging as usual. He
unplugged it from the phone line and the power supply to take it
somewhere and use it portable. The green light comes on, but it never
boots up. He check the lock switch, but it wasn't locked. Now it has
a constant green light on, and he said that the botton of the laptop
got quite hot. Seems like if the P/S had failed, and was causing it
not to boot up, the battery wouldn't have gotten hot. But it is hard
to say whether it is normal heat, or abnormal over-heat. So now, he
says, it doesn't power-down.
I'm thinking his battery may be toast. I am pretty good with PC
repair and building... can I buy a new Dell battery, and is it hard to
replace? How much?

Been there and done that this week. Exactly the same symptoms. Battery
was stone cold dead.

Got a replacement off Ebay for £40 including delivery. Has 60% more
capacity than the original Dell one! Took a few full recharges and
discharges before getting 100% capacity but you have to do that with
most new batteries.

Just to note, check the overheating hasn't fried one of the dimms.
