Boot problem

I have a homebuilt pc with a Gateway Brookings motherboard. I upgraded
several components for my nephew (HD, DVD-R, video card). Upon
completion it worked great, except I noticed that the onboard sound
isn't working (sound card has the yellow exclamation point in W2K
device manager). After trying various drivers, I tried installing
WinXP and sound still doesn't work so I conclude the onboard sound has
a problem.

Since I have 4 more identical motherboards, I try swapping out the
motherboard. Now, I get the bios boot screen then a flashing cursor.
Try all sorts of things, reseat CPU and memory, switch memory in the
two slots, unplug various devices to the bear minimum, no change in
boot problem. I switch out to another motherboard, same problem.

Any suggestions on nature of problem when the bios boot screen appears
normally, but gets stuck on a cursor just afterwards? I tried booting
to a floppy, but no go, same problem.
